Legal requirements for handlebar controls Empty
PostSubject: Legal requirements for handlebar controls   Legal requirements for handlebar controls EmptyWed Sep 08, 2010 9:33 pm

Hello there,

Does anyone out there know the legal requirements for what must be on the handlebars? I would like to put my switches elsewhere - horn, lights, electric start, indicators and engine stop switch. I'm assuming the indicators, engine stop switch and horn must be on the bars - please advise.

Cheers

Simon

if your vehicle is already registered, u just have to comply with the wof regs, which are here
http://nzta.govt.nz/resources/virm-in-service-certification/virm-in-service-certification.html#motorcycles
I dont think there is much restriction on where u put these things - as long as they work. I used to have my horn on the frame downtubes & u had to reach down and squeeze it (old bicycle type) & that got a warrant.

All depends on where you take it for WOF, my advise is to steer clear of places like VTNZ, go to bike friendly places

yeah that's true, as some stuff is simply the 'call' of the inspector, & if he's anal...
I've heard of people being failed for stuff that isn't illegal at all, it's just the inspector being OTT
My method is:
Ask the place first if they will pass any of your mods that you're not sure about - if they say no, then head down the road.

This is the reply I got from the lvvta forum site;

"The exact position for controls is not defined, there is just the principle that all safety-related operating systems must be able to be reached, and operated or adjusted, by a driver within an average range of height, whilst in the normal seated position.

There’s also a general principle that a vehicle should not be built such that no-one but the owner can drive or ride it, so the controls should retain a level of familiarity."

I like this, it is sensible, and vague enough to allow for some creativity. And I guess it will also depend on where you go for a wof as well.
