You know, that kind of thinking is what keeps NZ small. Small in thinking, small in expansion, small in entrepreneurialism. Yes Deus (Shed5 in NZ) bikes are not cheap, & I dont like all the designs personally, but what they are doing is worthy of respect, rather than the 'tall poppy' syndrome that we kiwis are so well known for. Anyway, if their bikes are so expensive, then that means when you sell your bobber, street tracker etc, that yours is going to be a very desirable price in comparison, so you should thank them. Doug's shovel is a beautiful & extremely well designed & built bike. How much do you value that at Doug? (hypothetical question, dont need an actual valuation) All the hours in the build, the years of accumulated knowledge, the sweat: you wouldn't undervalue all that would you? Well Deus don't undervalue what they do. And good on them. There's heaps of investment poured in there & it's part of a much bigger picture than just the price of their bikes. It's also promoting the bike culture; & until we all have our own big shop, cafe, warehouse, clothing range etc then why dont we just show a little more respect instead of acting like backyard cowboys? As for the quality/standard/design of the bikes: Deus bikes are largely based on the Japanese bike building subculture which is already influencing bike builders world wide. And I don't see any quality issues with them. If this pisses anyone off I dont really care, I think it needed to be said.

| Okay brett you don't get it,that bike has the following things changed on it that I can see,seat,guard/t/lite rearsets, visor h/lite,paint,bars,red rims,indicators,16" fr rim, airfilter and probably a couple of pieces I missed.I had a quick look on trademe and you can get a 2005-2008 sporty from $8695.00-$9800.00 now I estimate those parts on that bike to be worth between $4000.00-6000.00 dollars (those storz rearsets would be worth big dollars) so say you got a sporty for $7500.00 and added the $6000.00 you get $13,500.00 with todays exchange rate that deus bike comes out at $38770.00nz minus the $13500.00 leaves $25270.00 oh yea better take out $5000.00 for labour and this leaves you with just over 20g.I could do a lot with 20g and its not tall poppy syndrome I just dont see the value in deus bikes,Hey if anbody wants me to build them a bike sort of like that give me a yell and it won't cost 38g | |

Whoops sorry Doug, I just figured if the bike was OK you would have been riding it, I didn't realise you had taken the Ute down as well. My bad.

Doug, Im not dumb, I know all that dude. You are forgetting the whole ethos of the company; you are paying for the 'name'. It's a designer label.

| this is more constructive than "F**k Deus" anywayz. Doug your sums add up to over 100% markup. That is good business. (I'm sure there would be more expenses in there; you haven't factored in the building lease, & the labour is only about 50hours @ 100 an hour, I'd say there'd be more hours than that if you think about the paint prep, sourcing the parts, etc etc plus expense list would go on undoubtedly with stuff we haven't even thought of, website design, photography, publicity, advertising etc etc). I realize now that my bone to pick is about the difference between bike building & business. Deus are doing both, as opposed to the builder who is doing his bike for himself. Also, the bike becomes more than the sum of it's parts. It's now a 'Deus Special' & not just a Sporty with some bits changed & a paintjob. (Altho to us it's still a Sporty with bits changed & a paintjob). It's all in the eye of the beholder. So Doug I think we are both right. | |
