Big Twin Chain Conversion.

I know that Doug at least has done this before. I am using a standard softail 5 speed transmission for my Grinderfest project and a Kraftech rigid frame. That means I need to get rid of the rear belt and run a chain. I already have a 48 tooth sprocket on the rear wheel and am about to order a front sprocket. I have been looking at the Jim's conversion kit and it has sprockets with 3 different offsets. Anyone know how I work out which one to use? The rear hub was a 97 Sportster on turned round (I think). I found it lying under the bench and laced it to a spare 16 inch rime. Cheers.

i centered the rear wheel and ran a straight line to the trans to suss mine out. i have an offset pbi one in the shed if you wanna have a look at it and see if it suits.?

Is the sprocket a dished 48t or flat I don't think you should need a offset fr sprocket,I have got 24t evo trans fr sprockets from one of the suppliers in nz and I presume the wheel is for a 130 rear tyre and that the trans is not offset

Its a flat 48t sprocket and a 130 tyre with no offset on the tranny. I'll have a look for a front sprocket with no offset. Thanks Doug.

Recently helped a mate in Hamilton build a bobber with a Kraft Tech frame & Evo . Used the belt rear no probs so no offset will be OK. Chain the way to go though. Ease of maintaince & reliabiliy. Broken belts no fun miles from nowhere.

Yea chains are great for flinging chain lube everywhere + making a mess ,I would most times rather run a belt and in 18 yrs of riding harleys I have only broken 1 belt and that was at manfield racing my dyna Oh yea we better keep away from those electronic ignitions as well as they fail all the time.

i saw an ad the other day for an old triumph chopper on TM, one of the features was that they had removed the elec ign & put the points back.
couldnt figure out why that would be a desirable thing to do or why you would advertise that as a feature of the bike.

I've ordered a stock sprocket with no offset. If I need to space it out I'll make something up on the lathe. At least I know it will all line up that way.
I put points in my Shovel chopper back in England. It was meant to make it easier to kick buit it was a bastard.
