dragbike re vamp anyone?

anyone interested in seeing a bit of a tart up on a dragbike?gs 550 supercharged.140mph bike.
that motor and the frame in the background still hold a nz record.nice to have them in close company again...

this pic posted previously.bike was put together in a bit of a hurry for a race meet.

have to give it a quick refab and put the porky lil bitch on a diet.and loose the junk in the trunk rear.it has a fat ass seat going on..
anyone want to see more and progress?

not a whole load done today.got side tracked as per usual.while dismantling bike i noticed it is seriously overbuilt in areas.the top clamp being one.the bars were mounted to this but it made the bike real high in the front.a set of clipons have been ordered so i decided to lighten the top clamp.milled a pocket underneath and reshaped the rear part.no scales but i reckon i got close to halving its weight.i will do the bottom one and waist the steering shaft as well.

i are going to replace the antiquated brake system with something a bit newer/lighter with better braking power.

i'd decided to shorter the forks by 50mm.as per usual found other issues.bent leg,dented lower.straightened leg.honed lower,shortened,new seals/oil- all good.

working on new blower manifold.old one was super flimsy and has split in places.a slightly new design too which hopefully will work better.

lastly-new race lid for the season-thanks to guys at city motorcycles here in nelson.

not happy with these clamps.when whom ever built these they bored the steerer hole with too much offset and plugged the top,and the bottom.....the bottom is too sketchy for my liking.i are going to machine a new set...hopefully sooner rather than later as i want this back to a roller by the end of the week or close to!

got manifold bolted to engine.need to get supercharger mounted then work out the remaining part.

lightened the fork brace and made it look a little less industrial.

and lastly got the top clamp partially machined.need to drill/tap/counterbore clamp cap srew holes and cut the slit for the clamp.

cheated-cnc.
will drill/tap and cut the slit manually though.

I dont think cnc is cheating <-My learning curve so far.

huh? i draw a 2d picture on bobcad program.then choose tools (size/type)and the tool path (from contours on the drawing)
then enter depths of cut/roughing/finishing.speeds/feeds and a few other variables.then hit the create program button.too easy!!!
run time on these were about 15mins a side.

ha i got the emoticons but fully understand the explanation,especially the afraid-i just recently spent what was another bike or maybe two on a new lathe,guillotine and folder.was a hard decision,fun toys(motard or iron sporty) or creative toys....need to make some $ with them now to buy the fun stuff.
the huh was for the convert to g codes-that'll suck.once you get the lingo memorised it'll be a piece of cake(good luck)

fitted-got a roller almost-gotta do wheel spacers tomorrow and rebend the fork brace as its a bit out and is trying to spread the forks at present.

no cnc goodness today... all manual.cut out a new blower support plate (thicker)

front brake caliper mount made from 7075 aluminium



on the end of the blower it has an inlet/outlet that had a damn ugly bung on it-i just couldn't leave it on there.
i told a lie before- i did cut the thread for this on a cnc lathe....




been wanting to cut these damn ugly m12 steering stop nuts off ever since i first saw them.going to do something hopefully a bit more aesthetically pleasing.

the good cnc toys are at work (day job). i will take some pics sometime (after the start of the drag season)of stuff in the shed.i have built a few of my own toys-english wheel,swage,planisher,linisher,bender,shrinker stretcher(i did buy just the jaws),i have a louvre punch setup i made that needs a frame made for it,various steel tables etc, a fully adjustable motorcycle frame jig that is nearly finished(need to buy $200 worth of bolts to finish it-thats even with a huge discount!),and other various things-press tools etc.

last night i got the drilled disc fitted

fabbed up new steering stops,not fitted them yet-


got the new blower mount plate almost finished,needs a slot for the tensioner and maybe some lightening.

can fab last part of manifold now

overview of engine assembly-its a damn purposeful looking lump!

full day on it yesterday-today a bit scattered in amongst the big race.i keep pushing hard to get this done and each time i do something i create more work-ie i had to remove the fuel tank-upon doing so i find it wasn't rubber mounted and had been mounted incorrectly so a weld repair and an alteration to the mounting system and i'm back on track.
handlebars turned up-with a 22mm bar??? wtf who uses 22mm? used the clamps and made new bars 22.2mm-no time to muck around sending them back.shortened up a brake line and fitted to the front.
got the steering stops tacked on.

got a mount for the damper machined and a tab made up and tacked to the frame(i will weld them fully later)


got the remainder of the intake manifold sussed and part welded.

a steady for the blower made-to take some load off the manifold.

new fuel tap and fittings so when sitting on the bike you can see it and easily reach it-also allowing for a continual downward flow to the carb,and the fuel line not running through the exhaust as it was previously.

and lastly a few overall views-i'm starting to like this bike visually now,once that damn shopping trolley rear seat bar is gone i will be happy.the frontal area is lower now too.



have sussed out mounting the gauges as well-i need to make some mounts,same with coils moving them to a position where the leads are tucked away from the handle bars a bit better.

after nagging the sh*t outa another guy at work who runs a bigger cnc lathe i got him to spin up a bellmouth.cheers!!!

this is the "fuel bowl" yes that elbow-its also the needle seat,the fuel line connects direct to the needle seat via 3/8 fuel line-thirsty!!

mounted the boost gauge.don't know if you'll ever look at it.its within peripheral vision anyhow.

got coils mounted.

shift light mounted-might need a squidge more angle on it.

lastly muggins me tryin it all out for size- ride position,gauge position etc.tis comfortable-or will be once seat is sorted.
